SFBT Workshop: Change & Transition

Coach/ Trainer: Jane Tuomola

Dates: 26 – 27 Mar 2026

Time: SGT 9am to 5pm

Delivery Method: In-Person Class

Synopsis

Clients often present for therapy or coaching during common life transitions such as changing job, moving country or transitioning to a new life stage such as becoming a parent. While many of these changes can be longed for and exciting, there are always both losses as well as gains and clients may experience a variety of strong emotions that affect their ability function at their best. Clients may also be facing more challenging transitions such as aging, unexpected retrenchment or death of a loved one where they experience strong feelings of grief and are finding it hard to move forwards. This experiential workshop explores how therapists and coaches can support clients navigating these transitions using Solution Focused (SF) principles. Participants will learn how to balance acknowledgment of loss with progress toward a preferred future. The workshop highlights the art of Solution Focused listening—inspired by the Chinese character tīng—to engage clients with empathy, respect, and curiosity. Through discussions, demonstrations and practice, participants will refine their ability to co-construct conversations that honour both the client’s struggles and strengths, recognise cultural nuances in transition experiences, and know when to refer clients for therapy when emotions become overwhelming.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand how to balance acknowledgment and progress when supporting clients through transitions using Solution Focused questioning.
  • Apply the concept of Solution Focused listening to deepen empathy and identify what clients value most in times of change.
  • Adapt Solution Focused techniques sensitively across cultural contexts.
